God’s word makes me shine

“The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes.” (Psalms 19:8)

Should we as Christians look differently than other people? Should we act differently?  Should there be a noticeable difference that maybe we just can’t put our finger on, but somehow we know its there?

Last night, I went to LA to see Shane Clairborne, author of Irresistible Revolution and leader of a new wave of Christianity called new-monasticism. I was at first leery of seeing Shane speak, thinking that my way of thinking and his were not congruent. However, the more I listened to him, the more I realized that he might be a lot closer to the truth than I am. As Christians we say that we believe the Bible, we look at the example of Jesus and say “The was so nice. We are so glad He did that.” But when we really try to follow His example, we fall far short, and sometimes our meager attempt barely constitutes trying. Shane’s lifestyle and values strongly mimic those of Christ, especially in his love of people and desire for reconciliation of the whole world to Jesus.

One story he told last night was a central experience to his community-oriented lifestyle and speaks highly of his character. While walking in his neighborhood, he came across a woman in prostitution and began to speak to her, offering her food and shelter. As he and a friend brought this woman into their community she immediately asked,  “Are you all Christians?” He said this question shocked him, he nor his friend had mentioned Jesus or were wearing Christian jewelry or apparel. When he asked her how she knew, the woman answered confidently , “It’s because of your shine!”

So my question to you is do you shine? I know that for me, many times I don’t. I complain and I get fussy and I lack my joy. But in Psalms it tells me exactly how to shine. By following the words of the Lord and holding His precepts close to my heart, I will be different. If I live as Jesus lives, giving, sacrificing, loving unconditionally, there will be something unmistakably different about my life. It will shine.

In His love,
