Light overcomes darkness

13 01 2011

“This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth.  But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.” (1 John 1:5-7)

Have you ever noticed how one little thing can ruin a perfectly and otherwise great day? Or one small spice can ruin a whole meal? Or one small comment could ruin a friendship? It occurred to me today that this in face should not be how we live as Christians. As it says in this verse, and is true in science, light overcomes darkness, and it doesn’t work the other way around. If you turn on a small light in a very dark room, it makes the room at least somewhat visible. But if you have a small area of darkness, the room will still be bright, until there is a complete absence of light.

In the same way, as we look at our blessings and frustrations, one great blessing from the Lord or one joyful moment in our day should outweigh others frustrations as we strive to look at the world from a positive Christian perspective. We should be joyful always in every circumstance because Christ has freed us from the darkness and placed us in the light. And also, he has given us the joy of true fellowship with other believers. And for this I am forever grateful. I love my friends and I love the sense of community we share. We spur each other on towards a stronger relationship with Christ and hold each other accountable.

So as we reflect on our days, circumstances or trials, let us rest in the light of Christ and see the good side, that no matter what the situation we can always choose to glorify Him with our attitude.

In His love,
