Peace from an understanding of His love

30 12 2010

Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed, “says the Lord, who has compassion on you. (Isaiah 54:10 )

Peace lately seems to be the most fleeting and hard to come by characteristics. Just when it seems that everything is calm, a new storm appears on the horizon. Through most of life, this one after another mentality seems to ring true. Just as we finish one project, another lands on our desk. Just as we settle in somewhere, it is time to move. Over and over life is uprooted and changed. We can’t be comfortable for long. But maybe that’s just it. People always say, “the only constant is change,” which seems true for all of our early treasures. Wealth, health, friendships, jobs, everything comes and goes and changes. But the one thing that never changes is God’s love for us. When everything else is in turmoil, when life seems to jump from one crisis to the next, God is there. Steadfast and solid, a rock on which we stand firm.

Peace is considered a fruit of the spirit. Along with the other 8 (love, joy, patience, kindness, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness and self control), these “fruits” are not emotions. They are genuine signs that Jesus has control of our lives. Just like I believe that happiness is an emotion but true joy comes from God alone and is constant, relaxation may come just for a moment, but true peace is lasting.

So where do I find peace? The Sunday school answer to that question is of course “Jesus” as many would say, but sometimes the answer is more than one word.True peace comes through our trust that god tells the truth. That He indeed is serious when he said these words in to Isaiah, “though the mountains be shaken…my unfailing love for you will not be shaken…” No matter what trials and tail-spins are life takes, God is constantly there loving us through it all. The only true peace in the midst of chaos is trusting in God. First that He is there beside us to walk with us and have compassion for us. And second, that He knows where were going, has already been there and will be there when we arrive.

In His love,

Stacey
