Good gifts from Heaven

13 12 2010

“For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. “Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!” (Matthew 7:8-12)

In this Christmas season, the spirit of gift giving is everywhere. I too went Christmas shopping yesterday. We are all running around looking not just for stuff, but for the perfect gift. That gift that tells the receiver exactly how you feel about them, your friendship with them and how thankful you are for what they have done in your life this year. And its hard to find that gift. Some years it just doesn’t happen. We aren’t satisfied with what we buy. But sometimes, you run into exactly what you were looking for, even when you didn’t know what it was you needed. And even better than finding that gift is giving it. Getting to see the look on that person’s face can be priceless. Such a joy to give and to make someone’s day brighter.

When we think about God as our heavenly father, we should think of this same gift giving thought. God does not want us to suffer, he doesn’t try to make our lives harder than they should be. God desires to give us great gifts, to bless us because we are his children, and he loves us immensely. Sometimes, when i think things are bad, or I am not satisfied with some situation I have been given, I rationalize it in that way. “Oh God must think I need to learn a lesson,” but this is simply not true. We are not supposed to settle for less than perfect, a gift in disguise as something evil is no gift at all. God would never give us something that will cause us harm. He is perfect, and his gifts are great!

Merry Christmas (almost!!!)

In His love,

Stacey
