Discretion will protect you

13 10 2010

“For the LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. He holds victory in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones. Then you will understand what is right and just and fair—every good path. For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul. Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you.” (Proverbs 2: 7-11)

Wisdom is one of God’s greatest gifts to us. Godly Wisdom is not only good unto itself, but it is a gift that will save us from a multitude of other problems. When I think of wisdom, the early response is to think of intelligence. But that is not the kind of wisdom that God is talking about. God does not give us wisdom so that we can boast in our own knowledge. He gives us wisdom so that we turn to Him in every situation, we make decisions based on His leading and not our own human intelligence. Wisdom from God is more likely defined as discretion, clearly seeing the difference between good and evil. Sometimes I feel like my eyes are blinded to the truth, that I can not see what is so obvious right in front of me. This lack of sight leads to other problems quickly, one bad decision can lend itself to more in a short time.

Sometimes, the problem is not that I am blind, but i am simply not looking in the right direction, towards God. If I am looking at situations with my own agenda, it’s easy to lose sign of God’s desires for my life and what He knows is best for me. I am lacking wisdom when I take my eyes off the Lord.

Lord, grant me wisdom today, protect me with discretion and guard me with understanding.
