Humility is hard

“Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.” (1 Peter 3:8)

It is interesting to me how God works sometimes. Actually all of the time. However, today is one of those particular days where it is especially interesting. I often find myself listening to other people’s life situations and thinking “hmmm… if that were me, i wouldn’t have done that, or I would have thought this or felt this way instead.” But when the same situation happens to me, I act in the same way they did, or even worse!

Today, God has placed me in a situation where I have been completely humbled. Where I sit back and and just say “wow I didn’t see that one coming.” But that’s how God is. We are never going to know what is next. We are never going to be ready and never totally understand. But while that can be frustrating, it is both a blessing and a mystery, something that reassures my faith time and time again. I will never understand the Lord completely. That’s what makes Him God and me NOT!

However, when faced with this situation of thinking “I would have done it different”, God doesn’t tell us to be arrogant, or to tell people  how wrong they are, because one day, when it happens to us, that’s not how we would like to be treated. God calls us to compassion and humility. To instead say “I want to be there for you, I know you are hurting and I want to encourage you and join with you in this time to bring you back up.” We are called to be compassionate brothers and sisters who live in harmony with each other. Wow! What a different situation that we see in the world around us today, full of divisions and hate.

What would the world look like if we actually treated each other as we are told in this verse? Just my thought, something I will be working on this year.

In His love,
