Be still

9 09 2010

“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” (Psalm 46:10)

So being still is what God asks of us. Hmmm yeah I’ll need to work on this one. Exhibit A: I’m sure you can see evidence of my inability to ever stop talking and just be calm via my Youtube channel recounting my trip across the country with Lisa Tauszik. However, despite my God-given talent to constantly be moving, talking, jumping and laughing (usually at the same time), I am also called to be still. This is one of the ways that God strongly communicates His will to us through the Holy Spirit. We have to be quiet and listen, not for a great noise or chaos, but for a slight movement, a feeling, an inspiration.

One of my favorite things from high school youth group was a short video by Rob Bell entitled “Noise.” Click on that link to watch the full video on Youtube. It’s 10 minutes. Bell talks about how we, as Americans, keep our lives so busy that we rarely find time to listen to God. And as it says in 1 Kings 19, when God spoke to Elijah, He did not come in a storm or a mighty wind but instead He came in a gentle whisper. How can I hear this whisper when my life is fully of noise?
Goal of the week: Spend some intentional time being quiet before God. I bet I will learn something cool 🙂

In His love,
